Sewing kit

Sewing kitIf your sewing kit is the little doohickey that you got from a fancy hotel once, then you most definitely need to get starting making a newer, slightly more useful sewing kit. And if you cannot part with the poor excuse for a sewing kit that you have right now, throw it into your new one – it can still come in handy.

Here are some items that you should include in your sewing kit:

• Scissors – one pair is alright, but two pairs is better. The first pair should definitely be a good pair of fabric shears – use these only for cutting fabric. The second pair can be cheaper, and they can be used for other projects.
• Pins and cushion – you are going to use pins a lot – to pin on patterns, pen up hems, etc. Quilting pins with large heads are easier to handle, and they are the type you should include in your sewing kit. If you prefer a more modern twist on the pin cushion, go with a magnetic pin holder.
• Needles – have an assortment of hand sewing needles in your sewing kit.
• Thread – white and black are basic colors of thread that you should have. You can expand your collection to include other basic colors that are in y our wardrobe, as well.
• Seam ripper – yes, you could just pull apart improperly sewn seams, but you risk damaging the fabric when you do so. Include a seam ripper in your sewing kit.
• Cloth tape measurer – this comes in handy for many more uses beyond sewing purposes.
• Gauge – use this to make accurate measurements and more.
• Buttons – include a few buttons of various sizes. In fact, when you buy a new piece of clothing that comes with a pouch with a button or two inside, just throw the pouch into your sewing kit! It will be there when you need it.
